Krystal Romero - 20 UNDER 40

What are one or two of your greatest business and/or community achievements?

My two greatest community achievements occurred in 2023.

In April, I organized a couple of fundraisers for Patrick Hardy, a friend who had spent years fundraising for St. Jude before his brain cancer diagnosis left him unable to work and raised over $30,000 for him and his family.

Later that summer, my brother was the victim of a hit-and-run accident in Carencro. Megan and Charles White found his shoe in the street and stayed by his side until help arrived. To honor their compassion and selflessness, I organized a Good Samaritan Celebration at Prejean’s Restaurant and collected baby items for their expected child, transforming a traumatic event into a celebration of community kindness and unity.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do for a living?

My favorite aspect is the direct impact on people’s lives. Whether I am providing bedside care at Lourdes or connecting individuals and communities with resources through the Louisiana Department of Justice, I am privileged to advocate for and support Louisianans during both everyday moments and times of crisis.

You’ve served through crises as a nurse and also led in housing and nonprofit settings supporting mothers and families, while now leading as Outreach Representative for the Louisiana Department of Justice. How has your frontline experience shaped the way you lead people and programs?

Through my frontline experience, I’ve learned that every person has a unique story. It’s always good to treat everyone with dignity and respect without judging their situation. You never know the circumstances that have led someone to where they are.

I’ve also learned that even when you cannot solve someone’s problem, listening matters. Making people feel seen and valued makes a difference. Leadership is not always about having the right words. It is about how you make people feel. And that is what they will remember most.
